Garett DiStefano is the Director of Residential and Retail Dining Services for award-winning UMass Amherst Dining. As the director of the largest and most recognized program in the nation, Garett is not only committed to providing students with a healthy, sustainable and delicious meal but a leader in developing a program that enhances the quality of life of every student by building a community around food.

As the CFO—Chief Food Officer– he is responsible for all operational and service aspects of the University’s dining program including: financial performance, guest satisfaction, and industry leading initiatives. In 2019, The Princeton Review’s Best 381 Colleges ranked UMass #1 Best Campus Food for the third year in a row.  The award winning program has 23,000 students on its meal plan and serves 8.0 million meals annually and continues to be largest campus dining program, by revenue, in the nation.

Garett routinely works with accomplished chefs and nutritionists from the Culinary Institute of America and Harvard School of Public Health to improve recipes. Over the past five years the program has earned national accolades for promoting local food systems, culinary innovation, sustainable food sourcing and top notch catering — the program published a book on “Making Local Healthy, Sustainable, Delicious” a how to guide for food service operators.

Garett received his B.A from Union College and his M.B.A from the UMass Isenberg School of Management. Prior to joining UMass, Garett worked in his family restaurant transitioning to the investment field as a risk analyst on Wall Street as well as casual dining operations after college. He is a former regional director for the National Association of College and University Foodservice Services. Most importantly, Garett is the proud dad of two beautiful girls Elise (8) and Isabella (7) and dedicated husband to the girl he met in sixth grade, Beth.
